Undergraduate Scholarships
We are delighted to announce the launch of the University of Bath International Scholarships programme for 2007 entrants. 40 scholarships each to the value of £3000 will be awarded to students who pay fees at the overseas rate. These awards are merit based and all international students who apply to the University receive automatic consideration. There is no need to make a separate scholarship application. Candidates are considered on the basis of the information provided in their UCAS application and the scholarships will be allocated in recognition of academic excellence - namely the grades achieved in examinations prior to entering the University of Bath. Students selected for a scholarship will be notified in August 2007. In some instances the scholarships may be awarded on a conditional basis, in which case final confirmation of the scholarship will depend upon achieving a certain level of performance in high school or other examinations being undertaken prior to enrolling at the University of Bath. The £3000 payment will be credited towards tuition fees. Scholarship recipients will be presented with a certificate at an awards ceremony when they commence their studies at the University.

Some academic departments also offer scholarships for international students and they will advise applicants directly of what provision they have on offer.

A number of external funding bodies exist to support Masters level study in the UK and any applicant seeking support is also strongly advised to explore potential sources of financial aid available in their own country. In many cases the British Council will have a number of awards on offer through the Chevening scheme and further details may be obtained from the British Council in your country (http://www.britishcouncil.org/ecs/contact/countries.htm). Alternatively, there are international agencies, government departments, charitable organisations and private companies that may be able to provide financial aid for certain programmes of study and all are worth exploring.

Research level

A Masters level qualification from a prestigious university will normally be required. Evidence of some research experience (for example through a Masters degree project) is expected. Certified transcripts of all previous degree-level studies must accompany the application.

Some departments at the University of Bath now also offer the New Route PhD. This is a four-year programme that combines taught and research elements and may enable you to obtain a Masters degree (MRes) after one year. Applicants to the New Route PhD will not normally be required to hold a Masters degree when they apply to the University. Further information about New Route PhD can be found at http://www.bath.ac.uk/grad-office/newroutephd.

Training of teachers in Russia

A very important part of Russia's education system is the training of teachers. There are three levels: primary/basic, secondary and higher level teachers.

  • Training of pre-primary and primary/basic school teachers
Non-university level educational institutions (technikums, colleges) train teachers for pre-primary and primary schools. The duration of the course is two to four-and-a-half years. Some teacher training institutions of university level train teachers for primary schools. The course lasts for five years. Graduates of these two types of educational institutions may exercise the profession.
  • Training of secondary school teachers
Teacher training is carried out in teacher training university-level institutions. The programme lasts for at least five years. Graduates may enter the profession.
  • Training of higher education teachers
University teachers must have followed post-graduate training. A scientific degree ( Kandidat Nauk at least) is compulsory. Lecturers are appointed on a contract basis by the departments, tenured professors are appointed by the university.
