December 12, 2001, marked the anniversary of an important event that occurred 100 years ago. Pockets across the globe celebrated an event that did not perhaps receive the global media attention that it deserved. For it was on this day that Guglielmo Marconi sent out the "S" signal that proved beyond all doubt that his wireless system could travel around the curvature of the earth and over tremendous distances. With this, he set the foundation for the modern day radio, wireless technology and the digital age. Among the accolades that flowed in was the tribute from Italian Communications Minister Maurizio Gasparri who hailed Marconi as "an Italian myth and authentic global village hero."
